PARTNERSHIPS for SUCCESS

Partnerships for Success is helping individuals with disabilities and their families become active partners with collaborating agencies to make and implement public policies that directly affect their ability to work, develop economic independence and be fully included in their community.  Partnerships for Success is creating more understanding and more effective collaboration among District of Columbia agencies responsible for improving employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.  To help District agencies avoid writing and dictating policies in isolation from each other and from people with disabilities, participants in this project have begun the process of bringing experienced self-advocates to the policy-making table.

Partnerships for Success enables individuals with disabilities to work together with representatives of key agencies to coordinate the efforts of those agencies to develop and implement cross-agency strategies linking employment supports and services into the current overall Olmstead planning process.  The purpose of these cooperative strategizing activities is to develop coordinated strategic plans and activities that build relationships among employment support systems that are currently operating separately.  This approach will provide leadership and initiate specific activities that will improve access to employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Participating people with disabilities are contributing to developing strategies for the training and staff development needed by DC agency personnel, including One Stop Center staff, if they are to deliver customized employment services.  This work is being coordinated with collaborative activities organized and supported by Partnerships for Success that are part of the District’s Olmstead activities and planning efforts.  The collaborative activities involve relevant District stakeholder groups, including WIA partners, persons with disabilities and their parents and other family members, advocates, employers and community rehabilitation agencies.
